Designed to offer saltwater anglers precise, repeatable drag control for 20lb test monofilament tournament fishing, Shimano has introduced the Talica 20BFC (Billfish Concept) reel.

It offers exclusive design features to meet high performance tackle expectations and challenges of tournament sailfish and white marlin anglers.

“We took the characteristics needed to win tournaments and specifically built this reel to meet those characteristics – and meet the highest level of requirements for the pro billfish tournament scene,” said Ken Iida, of Shimano’s Product Development Team.

“The TAC-20BFC provides the retrieve speed necessary to quickly pick up line and come tight to the fish – whether kite fishing or backing down to fish – and the right drag curve to properly fish light line and not break off.”

Iida said that Shimano relied on key tackle retailers for design input, plus input and on the water testing on some of the top boats in the sailfish and white marlin tournament circles.

In South Florida, Captain Nick Zeher, onboard the ‘De-Bait-Able’ was ‘utterly’ impressed with what Shimano has created. “The amazingly fast retrieve rate was crucial when racing back on a fish and not having to slow down for the anglers to catch up, as well as keeping line belly to a minimum,” he said.

“With multiple fish on and rough sea conditions, the line capacity of such a compact and lightweight reel was outstanding – by far the best kite fishing reel I have ever used.

During a 14-day stretch of fishing in the Dominican Republic, Captain Jon Duffie and the ‘Billfisher’ crew landed 14 blue marlin from 80lb to 300lb, along with 42 white marlin and three sailfish.

“They are so fast it’s sick,” said Duffie. “You can stay tight on a fish no matter how fast you circle them up. When you have two or three whites on in a circle you don’t have to worry about too much (line) belly in the water with the TAC-20BFC. They’ve held up well to the conditions and the line capacity is great.

“Once the fish are hooked and on, they are the best reels I have used.”

The TAC-20BFC will retrieve 60ins of line per crank with its 6.7:1 gear ratio and features Shimano’s High Efficiency Gearing (HEG) and a durable cold forged aluminium one-piece frame and spool.

It has the capacity to hold 640 yards of 20lb test or 440 yards of 30lb test, 3lb of minimum drag at strike, and 15lb of max drag with freespool.

As with all Talica reels, the TAC-20BFC is backed by Shimano’s Platinum Premier Service Program when you register your warranty online.
