Umpqua Feather Merchants has extended its reach into the fly-fishing bags, packs and vests market with the launch of its new Tongass line of waterproof gear.

Included in the range are the 650 waist pack, the 1100 backpack, the 5500 gear bag and four sizes of dry bags, up to 35 litres, all of which are due to be in the shops by December.

Each product has unique and innovative features that distinguish it from other products in the market, says Umpqua. The 650 waist pack and the 1100 backpack have padded back panels and waist belts with water bottle holders and large pockets that serve as back-up rod carriers, allowing the angler to have a second fully-rigged rod at the ready.

The roomy 5500 gear bag has padded shoulder straps that can Velcro together to create a single handle/strap, as well as a mouth extension on the dual banded roll-top to provide extra water resistance. The dry bags are cleverly designed with oval-shaped bottoms, making them easier to fill and to prevent them rolling over.

All the Tongass products are made with welded polyurethane nylon waterproof fabric, with a thermo polyurethane interior coating. The roll top closures are dual-banded and the waist pack features an alternate no-clip roll-top function. All zippers are weatherproof.

Says Umpqua: “While most weatherproof packs on the market consist of one or two welded compartments with limited functionality and are frustrating to get in or our out of, Tongrass products are highly functional, well conceived hybrids of waterproof fabric and intelligent design. They protect gear from getting wet and nature’s other elements while providing heightened ease if access.”

One fan of the new Tongrass line is the Peak Fly Shop, Colorado, which posted this message on Facebook: “There is a plethora of waterproof packs on the market, but they all have the same fundamental problem. They are just big boxes and offer no real storage options. Now there’s a waterproof option that solves the problem. The Tongrass 650 pack has the right amount of storage space and isn’t just a pack that your gear will mingle in.”
