National Fishing Month, the initiative designed to promote participation in the UK, celebrates its Silver Jubilee this year.
Managed by the Angling Trades Association (ATA), the scheme has helped introduce nearly 300,000 people to fishing over the last 25 years by managing a series of nationwide events, coaching opportunities and media exposure.
Industry supporters of National Fishing Month include Pure Fishing, Daiwa, Leeda and Marukyu, as well as key bodies like the Angling Trust, the Professional Anglers Association, the Environment Agency and the Canal and River Trust.
Olympian and Big Fish Off presenter, Dean Macey, is also backing the big event. “When I was a kid, I found it hard to get my head around school work or any kind of discipline,” he recalls. “If it wasn’t for fishing and athletics I dread to think where I would be right now. They gave me something to focus on and kept me off the streets.
“Throughout my athletics career fishing helped me unwind mentally and I’m sure that without it I would have burnt myself out. That’s why I support National Fishing Month and urge everyone to get involved and take part.”
National Fishing Month runs between July 21st and September 3rd. To take part in a registered event go to www.nationalfishingmonth.com.
