Top Portuguese brand looks to France and UK

Portugal’s best-known fishing brand – an exporter to 13 countries worldwide – is targeting the French and UK markets as it continues to expand.

Pioneering Vega sees the introduction of its wide range of products in those important sectors as the next step in its development. Dinis Ermida, the company’s Marketing Manager, told Angling International: “We know we are very strong in fishing techniques that carry a lot of weight in France and the UK – like surf casting and lure fishing, as well pole and coarse angling.

“Both markets bear some resemblance to those in our own country and Spain, where Vega is well established. We are a healthy operation that is able to produce high-quality, market-specific tackle and which is constantly looking forward to new challenges.”

Vega’s comprehensive product portfolio includes rods, reels, lures, lines and accessories. Sales of its rods alone have exceeded half a million since the turn of the century.

Vega’s founder, Jorge Mourinho, added: “The French and UK markets are very mature, but sometimes a ‘jolt’ from an outsider gives anglers alternative purchasing options. We feel ready to compete in countries with demanding customers who know what to expect from their tackle.

“We have always had a strict philosophy of creating quality products at fair prices that meet the technical demands of local anglers. We can’t wait to start introducing specific products for the demands of French and UK anglers.”

Ermida said that Vega is looking for ‘young, ambitious’ companies to represent its brand in France and the UK.

“We are keen to link up with partners who know their markets well and who are committed to continuous growth.”
