The Sato Triple-zoom rod, from Tenkara USA, is named after Ernest Satow, an avid mountaineer who was the first person to make a written record of tenkara. This compact and lightweight model is intended, at its shorter length, for tighter streams, while the full-length version is designed for when streams become wider or for bigger pools.
Says Tenkara USA founder, Daniel Galhardo: “With several years of design experience under our belts and with the benefit of user feedback, we feel we have achieved what we set out to do, which is produce a rod that is super light, durable, versatile and with a very precise feel. We also wanted a rod that would make it easy to answer the question ‘which tenkara rod should I get?’ ”
The Sato™ has two patent-pending features. Triple-zoom allows use of the rod at three different lengths – 10’8”, 11’10” and12’9” (330/360/390cm).
“The average length for a tenkara rod is 12ft,” explains Galhardo. “We like to recommend rods that are closer to 13ft, yet many people are intimidated by such long lengths intended for smaller streams.
“So, we felt a rod with the three most common lengths would be an easy choice: short to ease people into tenkara; longer to provide a taste of the advantages presented by an extra length.”
The Keep your Plug ™ system (also patent pending) is a simple, yet innovative solution to avoid rod plugs being lost, an idea prompted by repeated stories of anglers being unable to keep their plugs for more than a year. The plug is simply removed from the top end of the rod and inserted into the hole at the bottom of the rod.
The Sato comes with two plugs and anglers are advised to leave one at home for when it might be needed. The rod has nine segments with a closed length of 22 3/4ins and weighs 2.6oz.
