The annual Progressive Cleveland Boat Show in Ohio, about to enter its 62ndyear, is being expanded to include a recreational fishing expo.
The show is being held in Cleveland’s I-X Centre – the ninth largest convention centre in the world – from January 16 to 20 and will feature the inaugural Fishing Expo.
The Lake Erie Marine Trades Association (LEMTA) has signed a multi-year agreement with the International Exposition Center to produce the Fishing Expo in conjunction with the boat show.
To meet the demands for both the increased boat show space and to accommodate the new fishing content, LEMTA is expanding the footprint for the combined event by more than 10,000 square feet.
“The northern Ohio region is rich in fishing opportunities, said the President of LEMTA, Michelle Burke. “But there currently isn’t a good fishing show in northern Ohio. Now there will be. It is fitting we rename the event, which will now be officially known as the Progressive Cleveland Boat Show and Fishing Expo.”
The Fishing Expo will include fishing tackle and related equipment, fishing charters and resorts catering for anglers. In addition, it will feature hands-on demonstrations, virtual sportfishing simulators, a fly-fishing lake and a line up of continuous seminars and clinics with angling pros atop a 5,000-gallon aquarium in the Buckeye Sports Fishing Theatre.

Pure Fishing, the world’s largest suppler of fishing tackle, has strengthened its dominant presence in the saltwater market with the acquisition of Fin-Nor and Van Staal from W.C. Bradley/Zebco Holdings.
Announced today, Pure Fishing says that the move will accelerate the group’s ongoing focus on driving growth in the fishing industry. Captain Craig Cantelmo, who headed up the Van Staal business for Zebco, will join Pure Fishing as part of the acquisition.
He will report to Dave Bulthuis, Pure Fishing’s newly appointed President of North America, who was the Director of Sales for Fin-Nor earlier in his career.
“The Fin-Nor and Van Staal brands are some of the most storied brands in the fishing industry,” said Harlan M. Kent, CEO of Pure Fishing. “We are excited to add them to our portfolio and are committed to maintaining their focus on the independent retail channel.
"Our Pure Fishing team looks forward to driving their growth and our overall saltwater business, which is anchored by the iconic PENN brand.”
Finn-Nor was founded in 1933 when Captain Tommy Gifford and Inventor, Frederick Martin Grieten, along with other Miami-based captains, created a prototype reel that caught a 527 lb bluefin tuna. The event carved out a unique position for the brand and Fin-Nor reels have racked up more than 900 international Game Fish Association (IGFA) records since.

New from top Spanish fly fishing tackle equipment manufacturer. Baetis, is the Nymph Matic 2.0 Ring reel.
The company, which is looking for distributors for its products across the world, says that the semi-automatic reel boasts ceramic guides to cater for very thin lines. This helps abrasion resistance and prevents spool tangles. It also includes a spring brake, micro-perforated design – to reduce weight – and aluminium-made interior mechanisms.
"Its main feature is the ease and speed with which it picks up the line," says the company. "This is made possible because the lever can be triggered by the touch of just one finger."
The replacement spools, both large arbor and standard, are easily interchangeable with a single click and available in various colours to differentiate the lines carried on each. Maintenance is also said to be very simple to undertake with spares for almost all moving parts.
"The Nymph Matic 2.0 is a very robust and durable reel that is ideal for competition and everyday dry fly and nymph fishing."

A UK-based line recycling scheme has received a boost in the form of sponsorship backing from a major long-established independent tackle wholesaler.
The Anglers National Line Recycling Scheme (ANLRS) has received support from WSB Tackle, which supplies a wide range of sea, coarse and game gear to outlets around the country.
Mario Massimino, General Manager at WSB Tackle, said: “We are extremely proud to be a corporate sponsor of ANLRS. Stopping fishing line and plastic ending up in landfill and turning it into something useful must be the way forward. We are handing out recycling bins to our tackle shops, fisheries and commercial charter skippers. The response we are getting from customers has been fantastic with a lot of requests to get on board."
Viv Shears, Co-founder of ANLRS added: “The team at WSB has been very keen to support what we are doing and with its help more tackle shops and anglers will get involved. As a volunteer-led, non-profit group, the support of the tackle industry is essential to help us encourage all fishermen to start recycling rather than binning their lines,
“Let’s hope that WSB Tackle is one of many to step forward and support the scheme in the coming months.”
As well as its donation, WSB has purchased a number of bins that it will be offering free of charge to its customers. It has also agreed to be..
