One of the UK's best-known fishing magazines is set to close after 56 years of publishing.
Angler's Mail, which is owned by Future plc, will publish the last issue of its magazine at the end of next month and has blamed 'major' financial challenges that have affected angling print media and the wider magazine and newspaper industry.
The news was broken on the magazine's Facebook page this morning. It said: "The Angler's Mail team have ridden many waves until now and are incredibly sad that the end is nigh after a publication run of 56 years.
"Thanks to the unrivalled team of contributors, plus submissions from anglers, high quality and interesting issues will be produced each week until the scheduled closure.".. Continue Reading
Retail sales of freshwater fishing boats in the US have recovered from early pandemic-related losses to reach their highest monthly sales total since 2007.
The encouraging figures come from National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) data just released that also shows wholesale shipments of personal watercraft were up an unprecedented 271% in July compared to June, on a seasonally adjusted basis.
Wholesale shipments of outboard boats returned to pre-pandemic levels and were up 7% compared to June and wholesale shipments of jet boats were up 176% against June.
“Manufacturing has steadily been ramping back up with production at 92% of where it was last year as manufacturers have continued filling back orders to meet the surge in demand for new boats,” said Vicky Yu, NMMA Director of Business Intelligence.
“Personal watercraft, outboard boats and jet boats drove both wholesale and retail sales in July – reflecting the high demand from new boat buyers.”
The new data comes from the NMMA’s Monthly Shipment Report, which tracks wholesale shipments of outboard motors and boats, stern-drive and inboard motors and boats, personal watercraft, jet boats, inflatable boats and boat trailers... Continue Reading
The Australian Recreational Fishing Foundation (ARFF) is urging anglers throughout the country to get involved in National Gone Fishing Day on Sunday, October 18.
Regarded as the country’s biggest celebration of recreational fishing, this year’s event has been designed to ensure people can take part safely via a special app.
The Foundation is encouraging anglers to get out and explore their local waterways, but is also making a virtual format available to upload photos and videos of their favourite fishing locations, catches and stories. Prizes will be drawn every five minutes.
The 2020 National Gone Fishing Day is themed around local waterways. While calling on as many people as possible to get out fishing, the Foundation is also recommending that groups are kept as small as possible and that social distancing and good hygiene habits are adhered to.
The ARFF points out that an estimated 3.5 million participate annually. “With droughts, bush fires and now COVID-19 throwing a dampener on so many sporting and social activities, the importance of recreational fishing as an avenue for health and well-being cannot be overstated,” says the Foundation.
“The significance of fishing upon mental health is something we want to highlight in this year’s event celebrations and for it to serve as a reminder that we should never take this for granted.”

The UK’s biggest fishing tackle retailer added to its chain of stores on Saturday by opening a new outlet.
Angling Direct opened the doors of its latest shop in Leicester with the promise that it will provide the 'greatest tackle choice' in the Midlands city.
Situated right next to the Old River Soar and not far from the River Trent, Angling Direct says the store is perfectly located for anglers to stock up on bait and tackle.
“Unlike our usual grand store openings, the Leicester store was opened ‘softly’ to keep all our customers and team members as safe as possible under social distancing and face covering measures,” said the Norwich-based company on its website.
Stewart Downing. Commercial Director for Angling Direct, added: “The opening went really well. There was plenty of good feedback on the new customer-focused lay-out and ranges, and sales were strong for such a nasty weekend,”
The UK retail chain and e-commerce business is listed on AIM, a sub-market of the London Stock Exchange. It grew overall revenue in the first half of the year by a robust 21% to £32m and posted a 43% surge in online sales to £17.9m. The company now has 38 stores across the UK... Continue Reading
