Imports reached new highs in the US this summer and may have broken records as the country’s economy continues to reopen and retailers replenish their shelves.
Much of the evidence for the recovery comes in the monthly Global Port Tracker report released this week by the National Retail Federation (NRF) and Hackett Associates, consultants to the maritime industry.
And though the data relates to July, the latest month for which figures are available, the good news is that August and September are also showing signs of being up on last year.
The report provides information on figures across a broad industry spectrum, but the fact that the recreational fishing sector has been ahead of the curve because of its natural compliance to COVID guidelines, looks to favour a trade seeking to catch up after a dire early spring.
Reasons behind the optimism include:
• Imports are helping rebuild inventories that have run low after consumer demand surged when stores reopened.
• Retailers are stocking up for the holiday season, when gift purchases reach an annual high and holiday time is likely to boost demand still further.
• Consumers continue to be denied access to other sports and pastimes, a situation that seems unlikely to change as the pandemic spikes unexpectedly in various parts of the US.
“Retailers are importing far more merchandising for the holidays than..Continue Reading

Patrick Sébile, founder of A Band of Anglers and one of the best-known product developers in the industry, has talked openly about his decision to volunteer for COVID-19 vaccine testing.
“I felt I should do this not only because of the burden COVID brings on people and the economy, but also because my son, Luke, has an immune defence system that is weaker than average. This puts him at more serious risk if he were to be infected,” Sébile explained on Facebook.
“For the love of my son, and my daughter, Jade, and because I did not want to be passive until a cure is found, I decided to do it. The study of the evolution of human wellbeing shows that vaccines are at the heart of it.
“I lived in Africa for 18 years and have seen people die at young and middle ages, something we do not witness on the same scale in Europe or America. A major factor in that is the lack of access to vaccinations.
“I also felt that as I have been dealing with fishing tackle prototypes all my life, why not help work on a vaccine prototype. Humour and hope go hand in hand.”
Sébile’s first inoculation was in Deland, Florida, two hours from his home, in early September. Sadly, it was the same day that he received news of the death of a beloved..Continue Reading
Rapala’s President and CEO has explained the reasons behind his decision to completely remodel the company’s product development operation.
Nicolas Warchalowski, who was appointed in January this year, announced this week the creation of a new global role in the company, as well as a new appointment for Europe.
David Neill, President and Managing Director of Rapala Normark in Canada for the last five years, becomes Executive Vice President in charge of the newly-created global product development and innovation operation, while Alban Choinier is promoted from Product Manager France to Vice President Product Development and Innovation Europe.
Neill will manage Rapala’s three product development locations in Minnesota in the US, Helsinki, Finland, and the Asia Pacific (APAC) office in Singapore.
“The overall objective is to step up product development and innovation right across the company,” explained Warchalowski. “These appointments are the first and most important step in that direction.
“We have to make sure we are developing the right products and that we have better synergies between our three regional product teams and 42 units across the world. To do that we need to have one person in a fully global role.
“We have previously spread the operation across different markets. It has never been integrated into a global function like this before. David will use existing resources and will be adding new ones.”
Warchalowski had..Continue Reading
O. Mustad & Son’s third CEO from outside the industry in a decade does not take up his role until the beginning of next month, but there are already indications as to what his priorities may be.
Kenni Riise (43) takes his place at the top of the world's foremost hook maker with a background steeped in supply chain management, in which he has a degree, and extensive experience in commercial branding and marketing.
He joins the group at a time when it is undergoing a strategy of expanding its product range to lessen its reliance on hooks, a move that has seen it acquire US braided line brand, TUF-Line, and introduce a range of accessories.
Mustad Chairman Ulf Bjerknes described the experience and personality of Riise as a ‘strong match’ for the group. “We need a profile with strong CEO experience, brand and market insight as well as logistical capability, to optimise Mustad’s relatively integrated value chain,” he said.
“Mustad has a very strong brand name globally within the sport fishing market while being the largest hook producer worldwide. This challenge, combining strong brand and market execution while gaining production scalability and efficiency, is a perfect match for Kenni.”
Riise said he would take advantage of Mustad’s 180-year brand history, strong position and awareness within an increasingly relevant sportfishing market to leverage the brand globally.
“I am looking..Continue Reading
