Retailers from across the US voted for their favourite products at the Big Rock Sports Outdoor Expo in Nashville last month.
It was the fifth year of the Fishing Tackle Retailer magazine-sponsored New Prioduct Showcase. And leading the way was Lowrance which took the top award in the fishing categories – Overall Best New Fishing/Camping/Marine Product to add to the Electronics/Marine accolade.
“The event is differentiated from other new product showcases at industry trade shows, like ICAST, where media organisations have a strong influence over the outcome,” said Big Rock Sports Senior Vice President of Sales, Brian Phillips.
“Since our outdoor retailers know the products and how they will perform better than anyone else, it only makes sense to give them exclusive power to vote for the winners.”
The full list of winners in the fishing section were:
Fishing/Camping/Marine Product: Lowrance Ghost Trolling Motor;
Rod: Lew’s Fishing, Mach 2 Speed Stick;
Reel: Shimano Stradic C3000 FL;
Combo: PENN Fierce III LE Grey Med Combo;

Shimano has announced further growth plans in Europe following its decision last year to take control of its own distribution networks in France, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal and Andorra.
The move is part of the company’s future strategy to increase focus on improving retail relationships. New sales and marketing managers are now in place for Spain and France.
David Sanchez, based in Shimano’s new offices in Madrid, brings experience as a seasoned sales manager, an avid angler and a published angling writer. He also played a leading role in setting up the Spanish Carp Fishing Association.
Leading the operation in France is Julien Le Bouffo, who has team-building and management experience from his previous role as Commercial Director at Fiiish, one of Europe’s fastest-growing lure brands.
In a statement to Angling International from its Eindhoven HQ, Shimano Europe confirmed that both managers are now recruiting for positions in the teams in both countries. Available roles include sales representatives, marketing officers, customer service staff and technicians... Continue Reading
One of the best-known names in the world of carp fishing, Carp Team England manager, television presenter and angling ambassador, Rob Hughes, has joined Carp Spirit.
Daryl Hodges, Head of Marketing at Normark UK, which distributes Carp Spirit and its sister brand Dynamite Baits, said: “Rob is a significant addition for Carp Spirit. We have seen through our last two years at Dynamite, both from a marketing and a strategic business development aspect, that Carp Spirit is increasing its drive and presence in the UK and other new territories, and Rob has been brought in to assist on a number of levels.
“In addition to his public facing media work, Rob has a long history as a consultant within the commercial side of the trade, particularly in respect of strategic development, having worked with the likes of Fox, Nash, Korda, and Pure Fishing over his 20-year involvement in the trade.”
For the last nine years Hughes has been a key consultant with Fox, but he says that the opportunity to move to Carp Spirit was too good to pass over.
“I’ve been aware of Carp Spirit for a long time as a key brand in the French market and having worked with Dynamite and the fantastic team there for the last two years, it’s more like a big addition to my current role than a brand new move.

The American Sportfishing Association (ASA) – the representative trade organisation for angling in the US – has appointed Rob Russel to the newly created position of Member Relations Manager.
"Finding the right candidate for the new position was not easy," said Blake Swango, Vice President for the Trade Show and Membership at the ASA. "The role requires someone with a proven track record of providing an outstanding customer support service to help our members with whatever they may need. We also wanted someone with a passion for the outdoors, including fishing and boating. Rob has both.”
The ASA has created the new role to focus on supporting its members and to be its staff point of contact. In addition to following up on members’ questions and requests, Russel will help to ensure that the organisation's members understand the benefits of membership and the business and legislative issues that could affect them.
“Rob will be spending a great deal of his time on the road, meeting with our members and listening to their concerns about their business and our industry,” added Swango. “I expect we’ll learn a lot over the next few years which will help us fine-tune how we can be of greater service to them.”
“This new position has the opportunities and challenges I was seeking,” said Russel. “I’m really looking forward to working with our members and, more specifically, listening to their concerns and..Continue Reading
The UK’s fastest growing and largest fishing tackle and equipment retailer has demonstrated its commitment to attract more young people into the sport.
Last year Norfolk-based Angling Direct gave away 8,248 whip poles to children and teenagers under the age of 16.
The fishing tackle retailer said: “Angling Direct is passionate about the future of fishing and supports the view that there are significant benefits from spending time out in the countryside on the bank.
"This, combined with the increasing concern that today’s younger generation is glued to mobile and computer screens, inspired the company to equip under 16’s with the bank resources needed to get them outside and engaged in angling."
Throughout 2019 Angling Direct ran several campaigns designed to encourage the younger generation to give fishing a go. In July it ran a promotion offering a free Garbolino whip to under 16’s when they spent £5 instore. “The scheme was an immense success and resulted in us giving away 6,606 poles,” it added.
In October it ran another promotion offering one Garbolino Telefloat Margin Pole, one pole rig and a bag of Fjuka bait, courtesy of David Preston, founder of Preston Innovations. This also required a £5 purchase, but in return resulted in under 16’s being presented with everything they needed to go fishing the very same day.
To conclude a successful year, Angling Direct ran..Continue Reading
An award at this month's Big Rock Sports Goods Show has capped an impressive winning run for the newly launched Lowrance Ghost Freshwater Trolling Motor.
The latest prize in the Electronics – Marine and Best New Fishing Product category follows similar successes at the Northern Wholesale Marine Show in the US – a third successive triumph at the event – and Metstrade in the Netherlands. It also won an accolade from the Designers Institute of New Zealand.
"Our design team put their heart and soul into Ghost and it's thanks to their dedication that it has seen so much recognition," said Knut Frostad, CEO of Lowrance parent company, Navico. "We are so grateful to all the judges, experts, media, dealers, anglers and our loyal customers who have been so supportive.
"We are looking forward to further triumphs in the years to come and the continued success of Ghost."
Reliable, rugged and built to last, the new ultra-quiet Lowrance Ghost Freshwater Trolling Motor has a newly designed brushless motor with the most thrust and the longest run time of any trolling motor on the market, says Lowrance.
Other benefits include integrated Lowrance sonar options, waypoint anchoring and an 'industry-leading' three-year warranty.
The company adds" The combination of reliability, power, efficiency and quiet performance give Ghost a winning combination that ticks all the boxes for what anglers want in a..Continue Reading
