Paddlesports sales surge as outdoor activities boom

Paddlesports sales – of which fishing is a growing category – are booming, according to a report from a leading US consumer trends company.
Sales of paddlesport products increased 56% in June this year compared to the same period in 2019, hitting $174m for the month, say analysts at the NPD Group.
Although paddlesport products had been slow to move earlier in the year, the demand has recently accelerated as consumers seek activities that keep them active and socially distant.
Inflatable kayaks and paddleboards have been particularly popular because they are easy to store and cost less. In June 2017 inflatables accounted for 19% of paddleboard and 9% of recreational kayak sales. In June 2020 those figures rose to 66% and 26% respectively.
“The combined effect of inflatables increasing in popularity and the heightened demand for outdoor activity has increased sales and transformed the types of products that comprise the category,” said NPD.
“With higher turnover, many retailers will need to reset their inventories and monitor industry trends to ensure they stock products that will be both popular and profitable.”
The NPD Group, headquartered in New York, is ranked the eighth largest market research company in the world.
