S. Veals & Son, which started trading in 1846, has closed its doors for the final time.

One of the UK’s oldest fishing tackle stores has gone into administration after more than 170 years of trading.

S. Veals & Son Ltd, trading as Veals Fishing Tackle & Practical Tackle, has blamed the challenging angling retail environment in the UK and the closure of the shop due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The company says that the situation does not affect Veals Mail Order, which is a separating trading entity.

In a post on its Facebook page, a spokesperson for S Veals & Son said: “We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our staff past and present – and, of course, all our customers, many of whom have become great friends. We thank you for the decades of great memories.

“Veals started trading in 1846 as a proud family business and it is with a huge sadness that we will not be able to reopen the doors to you all.”
