A new fishing boat manufacturer has this week announced plans to invest $1.6m in establishing a factory in north-eastern Mississippi.
Avid Boats says the facility in Amory, around two hours south-east of Memphis, will employ 40 people by the end of the year, rising to 75.
The 80,000 square feet factory will make aluminium bass and centre console bay craft, ranging from 17 feet to 23 feet, and aims to offer six models in its first year. It expects to build 750 boats next year and double that production by 2022.
“Although we are a start-up, our team brings 100-plus years of combined marine industry experience to the table,” said Avid Boats President Phillip Faulkner, who previously founded the boat maker, NauricStar, which was sold for $80m in 2017.
“The boat business has been part of my life ever since I can remember and it has always been a dream of mine to start from the ground up and continue my family’s legacy as a successful boat manufacturing operation.”
Avid plans to capture a share of the lucrative aluminium fishing boat market in the US.
