Fishtec, widely regarded as the UK’s largest mail order business, is in the throes of a closing-down sale after confirming that it is to cease trading.
Based in mid-Wales, the business is part of the BVG Group Ltd, which claims annual sales of £140 million. BVG recently sold its Airflo brand to Mayfly Outdoors in the US.
Fishtec, which has marketed itself as the ‘UK’s largest and best mail order fishing tackle retailer’, will also close its retail outlet in Brecon. No redundancies are planned as staff will be absorbed into other BVG brands.
Allan Crawford-Plane, Marketing Director of Fishtec, told Angler’s Mail magazine the brand was closing because of declining sales and the impossibility of making a profit on general fishing tackle retail.
“With the growth of low-priced sales on platforms like Amazon and eBay, the profit margins are too small,” he added. “The only way forward is to focus on growing BVG brands like Total Fishing Gear. These will continue to operate using their own websites. We will guarantee all existing orders at Fishtec.”
Meanwhile Fishtec is offering huge savings of up to 50% on many top brand products to clear stock.
BVG, which has more than 750 employees, operates a number of other mail order, internet, catalogue and distribution businesses covering the sports, home, garden and nutrition sectors. These include Total Fishing Gear, which has been fronted by Matt Hayes and Dave Lane.
