Set to make its bow at the Bassmaster Classic Outdoors Expo in March: The Super Duty Wide Spool SDW2SH from Lew’s.

US manufacturer Lew’s reckons its Super Duty Speed Spool series is arguably bass fishing’s toughest baitcast reel. Now it says the reel’s performance has been boosted by another 40 yards with the introduction of new wide spool versions.

The Super Duty Wide Spool SDW2SH has a 7.1:1 gear ratio and will be the first of the new models available when it debuts at the 2016 Bassmaster Classic Outdoors Expo in early March.

The 11-bearing, one-piece aluminium frame model features high-strength brass gearing, holds more line than its predecessor and comes in right and left hand versions.

Following soon after will be the SDW2S (5.1:1 gear ratio and 21 IPT), the SDW2H (6.4:1 gear ratio and 28 IPT) and the SDW2XH (8.3:1 gear ratio and 35 IPT). A left-handed model, the SDW2SHL, has a 7.1:1 gear ratio and 31 IPT. All are expected to be available from May this year.

Each reel in the Super Duty Wide Spool series, consisting of four right-hand models and one left, holds up to 190 yards of 14lb test line. The line capacity of the original Super Duty reel series is 150 yards of 12lb test.

Super Duty baitcast reels are designed and built for heavy fishing applications such as flipping heavy jigs on big lines, handling large umbrella rigs and fishing big crankbaits and giant swimbaits.

All Super Duty models are fitted with a no-flex aluminum sideplate on the handle side. Gears, crankshaft and worm gear are high-strength brass. The palming sideplate is lightweight graphite finished with rubber paint for grip and durability.

Cast control is aided by Lew’s Magnetic Control System (MCS), requiring just a click of the external dial to adjust the magnetic brake settings. The Zirconia line guide is titanium coated to reduce friction. Anti-reverse is Lew’s time-tested Zero Reverse clutch bearing system.

Super Duty reels feature a forged, double-anodized aluminum U-shaped spool that is braid ready. The spool’s tension knob is knurled aluminum and has an audible click during adjustments. The carbon-composite drag system delivers up to 14lb of drag power and also has audible click adjustment.

All Super Duty Wide Spool models have a bowed, anodised aluminum 95MM power-cranking handle with oversized, round EVA knob.
