Lehr Outboard, a relative newcomer to the marine industry, is hoping to turn the heads of boat anglers with its new 15hp propane-powered outboard.
The Californian-company introduced the eco-friendly model at the recent Miami Boat Show and believes there are strong sales to be had in the fishing market.
Using only ‘green’ technology, Lehr produced the world’s first propane-powered outboards as it championed cleaner emissions and more efficient engines.
The 15hp is the fourth 4-stroke in the Lehr line-up. It comes in eight, 15-inch or 20-inch shaft models using a typical five-gallon BBQ propane tank. It features the world’s first internal, electric start battery which eliminates the weight and clutter of a typical lead acid battery.
“There has been a lot of media coverage about the negative impact on marine engines of today’s gasoline blended with corn ethanol,” said Captain Bernardo Herzer, the man behind the Lehr engines and the company’s CEO. “It has ruined many outboards.
“Propane has so many benefits over gasoline. It has higher octane and lasts indefinitely, it’s lower in cost, there is no risk of gas pollution, zero evaporative emissions, easy no-choke starts, no priming and no carburetor gum-up.”
Among a number of accolades, Lehr won the EPA clean-air excellence award for helping improve air and water quality. Herzer adds that propane is plentiful in North America and reduces the nation’s dependence on foreign oil.
The 15hp model carries a three-year warranty and is available along with other Lehr outboards at US marine dealerships and over 300 West Marine stores.
