Staying ahead of the curve in a fiercely competitive retail environment is vital for the success of any business.
The recreational fishing tackle trade is no exception and those retail businesses that prosper use every option in their ‘tackle box’ to ensure they stay one step ahead of the opposition.
One vital tool that keeps the savvy dealers across the USA and beyond at the cutting edge of retail is ICAST, says Terry Robinson, Director of Florida-based Offshore Angler, part of one of North America’s most successful and iconic retailers, Bass Pro Shops.
Robinson told Angling International: “You have to go to ICAST. I cannot imagine not being part of it. It is a tool that we use to ensure that our company is stocking all the latest gear and is keeping up with all the latest trends.
“Today’s angler is very demanding and wants the best of the best. If you are not stocking it then he or she will go elsewhere. Businesses cannot rest on their laurels or they will be passed by.
“The New Product Showcase is awesome, and I take the time to go through everything that is there. It is a big part of the show for me. ICAST is the only place that delivers the products that will make the next big noise in the industry. By not going you are putting your business back months or missing out altogether as your rivals steal a march.”
Robinson says that unearthing that ‘little bit of stardust’ adds to the excitement of the event. “It is great to unearth something from one of the little guys that is going to be the next big thing,” he says.
“As an angler and tackle nut myself the show is like being a kid in a candy store – it’s really fun to see all the new product out there.”
As well as hunting out new product, Robinson and his team of merchandisers use the show to meet up with current vendors and potential partners. “ICAST is a full-on three days. There is so much for us to do – it is definitely not long enough in my book.”
