ICAST is the ‘single most important’ event to grow your business, says a man who has been on both sides of the industry fence.
David Workman Jr., founder of Jacksonville, Florida-based Strike-Zone Fishing, has been attending the world’s largest fishing tackle trade show for as long as he can remember, both as a retailer and as a manufacturer.
Before starting the two-store business, Workman was a partner at C&H Lures for 23 years, so he is well aware of the benefits of the show from both perspectives.
“For a manufacturer, it is the only place where you can get your products in front of so many dealers. There is not a gathering like it in the world. From the retail point of view, getting to see so much product in one location is very important – especially the new stuff.
“I need to see what is new and out there. By attending ICAST I can find out when products will be available. I can talk terms and prices with vendors so that I can start plotting my course for the next year.
“I enjoy the excitement and the buzz of the show and seeing all the really cool stuff that has been launched. There is always something that stands out and which will excite your customers.”
As an ICAST veteran, Workman has visited the show at many locations, including Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Dallas. But hailing from Florida, he is happy to attend the event in his own backyard.
“It is easy for me to get there, but wherever you are based it is too important to miss. Everything you need to run your business is there in Orlando.”
Business apart, Workman also enjoys the social side of ICAST. “With more than 40 years in the trade, I know a lot of people and it is great to meet up with them once a year and find out what’s happening in the industry.”
