UK fly fisheries threatened by liquidation

Share

Fishing at three popular UK trout waters is under threat following news that the company managing the venues has gone into liquidation.

Fishery Management Ltd, which manages the Draycote, Eyebrook and Thornton reservoirs in the Midlands area, declared voluntary liquidation due to heavy debts, little working capital and a low asset base.

The owner of Fishery Management Ltd, Ifor Jones, died in January this year. A subsequent statement on behalf of the company explained that during his illness he requested that an interim management team be formed to consolidate the accounts and take a view on the state of the business.

“Unfortunately the business was found to be very heavily in debt, with little working capital and a low asset base,” said the statement. “The team explored every possibility to work through the issues and transition the business as a going concern. Sadly, to no avail.

“With great regret and sadness, a decision was made to wind down the business and put it into voluntary liquidation. This was the only option available.

“This isn’t the news that any of us would want to hear regarding the business and the prospects of fly fishing at Draycote, Eyebrook or Thornton reservoirs.”

Despite the current predicament, there is a suggestion that fly fishing could continue at the venues under new management or ownership, with the statement adding: “While this brings to an end a chapter in fly fishing that has touched many peoples’ lives we do not believe it will ultimately be the end of fly fishing on the waters.”
