The fly fishing community is being urged to come together and show its solidarity in the fight to save one of North America’s most prestigious salmon fisheries from mining development.
Fly shops, manufacturers, guides, lodges and industry professionals from across the United States have banded together to stage a Day for Bristol Bay to raise much-needed funding for the Bristol Bay Defence Fund, the front-line group that is going toe-to-toe in Washington DC with the foreign mining interests behind the project.
For over a decade the fly fishing industry, anglers and conservationists have been campaigning to prevent Pebble Mine from ‘devastating’ Bristol Bay and the fisheries that sustain 14,000 jobs, a $1.5 billion economy, native communities and a world class fly fishery destination.
Ben Bulis, President and CEO of the American Fly Fishing Trade Association, said: “It is crucial we get as much participation on Saturday, August 24th to make A Day for Bristol Bay the biggest statement against Pebble Mine from the fly fishing community yet. We need you to shop, fish and show up for the cause.”
