European market faces big changes warns Daiwa recruit

Ricky Teale (left) is welcomed to Daiwa by Taka Inagaki, the head of the group’s European business.

Ricky Teale’s decision to join Daiwa as European Project Manager was strongly influenced by his view of the future of the European market, says the former Preston Innovations, Fox International and Zebco Europe man.

“I believe the industry in Europe is going to go through some big changes over the next five to ten years,” he told Angling International. “The way I see it is that the environment is going to favour the strongest brands, while some of the weaker, more regionalised ones could struggle and even disappear.

“I wanted my next move to be with a strong brand – and they don’t come any stronger. Equally important, I like the people at Daiwa and the more I talked with them the more I realised what a good fit this is for me. I am happy to be working with the world’s number one brand.”

Teale had been linked with a number of leading companies since leaving Zebco Europe in August last year, although a non-compete clause in his termination agreement with Zebco meant that he could not take on another role in the industry until August 1st.

Talks with Daiwa began last Christmas and prospects of an agreement over the newly-created role of European Project Manager began to take shape in June, with an official announcement being made earlier this week.

Teale’s focus will be on the company’s main businesses in Europe – working with the Daiwa companies in the UK, Germany, France and Italy.

“Daiwa is brilliant at rods and reels but is keen to grow the European business in other product areas, and it realises it needs the expertise to do that,” he said.

“I have lots of experience in those areas from my time at Fox and Zebco so I know the European markets backwards. Hopefully I can help identify some opportunities and fill some gaps in its pan-European product offering.”

Teale, one of the most respected product developers in the industry, was at Preston Innovations for 15 years, five of them as Managing Director. He left in 2011 and spent five years as Group Marketing Director at Fox before joining Zebco Europe as Commercial Director. He begins his position with Daiwa on September 1st

Taka Inagaki, head of Daiwa Europe, said the company would benefit from Teale’s long experience of product development within Europe.
