If there is such a thing as the perfect location for a fly rod manufacturer, then Drifter Fly Fishing has probably found it. Based in Denver, Colorado, the company’s build shop is situated high in the Rocky Mountains.
It is here among the narrow canyons, streams and pocket waters that field-testing for the company’s latest production – the Drifter Covert – was carried out. The thinking behind the Covert was to design the ideal trout fishing rod and Drifter says this lightweight model excels for precise casting, delicate presentation, easy loop formation and the ability to load for distance when needed.
“Our blanks are constructed using some of the highest quality carbon fibre available in the world today, sourced from a handful of small providers,” adds the manufacturer. “Blanks are designed and built using the latest computer-aided design and manufacturing techniques, and we spare no expense on components.”
Those components include a carbon graphite blank, incorporating several different modulus materials throughout the length of the rod and providing a moderate to slow action with optimized feel, response, and loading. A Helical carbon wrap core helps ensure durability and straight predictable casting.
There is a Fuji Titanium stripping guide and Snake Brand Universal guides with feet contoured to the radius of the blank. The anodised reel seat has a Box Elder Burl wood spacer and the Half Wells grip handle is turned from premium cork. Available in 2 through to 5-weight models, all rods are four pieces and come with an anodised aluminum tube and cotton protective sack.
For customers looking for a personalised product, Drifter will take the Covert blank and customise the wrap colours, grip shape, reel seat, or other features to order. Minimum completion time is four weeks.
Drifter Fly Fishing was founded in 2014. The number of fly rods it builds each year can be counted in hundreds, with each one being handcrafted in the US.
Says Drifter: “Our mission is to make the best trout rods on the planet and we stand behind our work. Every rod purchased on our site comes with a 90-day satisfaction guarantee. If the customer doesn’t like it, he can send it back, no questions asked. Each Drifter fly rod comes with a lifetime guarantee against product defects.”
