Decathlon, reputedly the world’s largest sporting goods retailer, and owner of the Caperlan fishing brand, is to open a second major store in the US.
Situated in the Potrero Hill neighbourhood of San Francisco Bay, it is scheduled to open in November this year, around six months after the company opened its first full US retail experience store in the area.
The 38,370 square feet premises is on the same intersection that was the original location of the Seals Stadium, the first home of the San Francisco Giants. It features a large community space for events, workshops and fitness classes.
“This shopping centre was once a hub for sports in San Francisco, and we look forward to bringing sports back to the centre and being part of the Potrero Hill / Mission District community,” said Bertrand Tison, Director of Decathlon’s Potrero project.
Additionally, Decathlon is expanding its use of technology-driven solutions to include mobile check-outs, an in-store robot for inventory and improved click-and-collect ordering so people can shop online and pick-up in store on the same day.
“Bay Area residents are looking to buy smart when it comes to their outdoor and sports gear,” added Sophie O’Kelly de Gallagh, Chief Operating Officer of Decathlon USA. “We’re proud to be playing a bigger role in the active lifestyles of our Bay Area community – and to be part of the solution that helps people get outside and discover new sports. ”
Decathlon opened its first full retail store in Emeryville in April this year, following the test launch of a smaller ‘lab’ store in San Francisco in 2018.
