Fishing World has survived a major shift in the media landscape over the last decade and is this year celebrating its 50th year as Australia’s longest established angling magazine.
The publication has successfully combined the disciplines of print, digital and social media to deliver a winning formula for the brand. Founder Ron Calcutta started Fishing World in 1969 at a pivotal time. Sportfishing was in its infancy, but trends in tackle and techniques were rapidly changing.
Fishing World provided anglers nationwide with the perfect platform to learn and be inspired by some of Australia’s most influential and talented writers and photographers.
Over the following half century it has continued to evolve without losing sight of the big picture. Some of the hottest trends in fishing – land-based game, saltwater fly fishing, jigging, soft plastics and more – were discovered in the pages of Fishing World.
Fishing World Editor Scott Thomas said the secret to the magazine’s success has been in its commitment to quality content and a willingness to adapt in an ever changing market.
“Over 50 years Fishing World has established itself as a leader in its field. The number one focus has always been the quality of our content and providing true value for readers, whether they’re beginners or experienced fishos,” said Thomas.
“The past decade has brought a significant shift in the media landscape and Fishing World hasn’t been afraid of change. The brand has evolved and become so much more than a magazine. These days Fishing World is recognised nationwide as the country’s leading source of information and entertainment online at fishingworld.com.au, via social media, and of course, in print.
“Our readership has grown exponentially and we’ve tapped into new a world, combining Fishing World’s 50-year heritage with a new audience and evolving media platforms,” said Thomas.
To celebrate the 50th anniversary, Fishing World has announced it will be releasing a special collector’s edition magazine for the August 2019 issue. It will be feature-packed with historical content and will come with a free limited edition lure.
