Victoria became the last Australian state to open up for fishing this week and immediately the most searched-for question on Google in the region was ‘Can I go fishing?’ – proving the desire of consumers to be active in the market once again.
“This bodes well for strong growth in the future,” said Scott Thomas, Editor of Fishing World, Australia’s premier magazine for the sport. “There is a real feeling that Australia is back in business. The mood is optimistic given Australia’s low rate of infection and the easing of social distancing restrictions.
“Fishing participation in most states has been strong throughout the pandemic with a positive outlook despite an overall downturn in consumer confidence.
“Most tackle stores have managed to remain open and government assistance, in the form of employer payments, has managed to keep many businesses afloat. While overall sales have declined, the predictions of a drawn-out pandemic and further lockdowns didn’t come true.”
