Mike Iaconelli has worked with Pure Fishing brand Abu Garcia on its ‘Ike approved’ series of combos for the youth market.

Two of the world’s best-known tackle brands have announced initiatives targeting young anglers.

Abu Garcia and Shakespeare, both part of the Pure Fishing portfolio, have added products to their line-ups designed to encourage youngsters to take up and stay with the sport.

Abu has enlisted the services of pro bass angler Mike Iaconelli to develop a range of ‘Ike approved’ tackle for young anglers just learning to fish through to those with more advanced skills.

“It’s my mission to get more kids fishing and building their love for the outdoors, so I couldn’t be more excited about the new Gen Ike series. I think kids who are just trying fishing for the first time or are looking to develop their skills are really going to have some fun with them,” said Iaconelli, who has long been involved with youth fishing.

The series takes into account versatility and skills growth for aspiring anglers and includes the Abu Garcia Ike Dude Spincast and Spinning combos for beginners starting as early as age eight, the Gen Ike EZ Cast Combo for first time, low-profile baitcast anglers and the Gen Ike Spinning and Low Profile Combos for mid-level anglers.

Shakespeare meanwhile has revealed its all-new Customize-It! Combo that enables kids to create their own one-of-a kind rod and reel.

The four-foot, six-inch combo comes with attached stickers and a white rod surface ready for personalising.

“We sat down with a group of kids to see what their ideal set-up would look like,” said Shakespeare Vice President of Marketing Jon Schlosser. “We know kids love to create and customise everything from their shoes to backpacks to toys, so this was a way to bring that creativity to a product that would get kids excited about fishing.”

The launch comes at a time when record numbers of new anglers, especially families, are taking up fishing. Giving them the opportunity to put their own mark on the combo increases the fun, says Shakespeare.

Also available in the series is a Customize-It! Tackle Box. Designed with young hands in mind, this multi-purpose box gives children a blank canvas to use their creativity and make it their own. The box comes complete with a 33-piece tackle assortment and spill-proof tray.
