Scandinavian fly fishing company, Zpey, has announced a new line of reels. Its Epsilon edition features an improved brake system and new colours, along with other modifications.

The range is the result of a concept introduced by Zpey’s Senior Product Designer, Henrik Mortensen, based on a minimalistic but elegant approach.

Working on the pretence that ultimate design should hint at the impossible, but provide the necessary functionality critical to any modern fly reel, Mortensen and the Zpey team coined the mantra “floating in air” as the basis of their development work.

“And that is just what they do,” says Mortensen. “They seem to hover just under the reel seat of the rod and I often have to get in very close to make sure there is no magic involved.”

Each Epsilon is manufactured from a single block of solid aluminium, with all superfluous material removed. “The reel’s brake system is designed exclusively for Zpey and its amazingly smooth resistance will prove very helpful in dealing with big fish,” added Mortensen.

The brake is fitted to the spool for a 100% waterproof system, the only exception being the 9-11 models. All the reels are designed to be saltwater resistant, even when subject to complete immersion.

The Epsilon is available in five different models, ranging from the extremely light trout version to the more powerful salmon models. Anglers can choose between blue, titanium and black. Line capacities, line types, weights and colours for each model are detailed on the Zpey website.
