Patrick Sébile is back in business. Ten months after his exit from Pure Fishing, the irrepressible Frenchman has announced the launch of a new company, A Band of Anglers.
Sébile, considered one of the most creative forces in the tackle industry, has recruited a number of associates to produce lures, rods and accessories.
The Florida-based business plans to have booths at both EFTTEX and ICAST this summer, where it will showcase its first products.
The concept, says Sébile, is centred on creating a company that understands the vagaries of the fishing market and can talk to the trade from a position of knowledge.
“My message to dealers is that every person in this company is a fisherman or woman and every person working with me understands fishing tackle and the market,” he explained.
“Almost all dealers are fisherman themselves. We share the same interest and love of the sport. That is why we call it A Band of Anglers. There is no room for corporate people who have little or no understanding of how this unique market works.”
The Sébile company enjoyed a meteoric rise under its founder’s charismatic and passionate leadership and the operation was moved to the US. It was at one point the most talked-about lure brand in the world, becoming the only brand to make a clean sweep of lure categories at ICAST, EFTTEX and the Australian AFTA trade show awards in the same year.
But with the demands of the business taking a toll on his health and realising it needed more backing to reach its full potential, Sébile sold to Pure Fishing in 2011. However, the brand became increasingly less visible and last year the world’s biggest tackle manufacturer (by volume) decided it no longer required his services.
In an ironic clash of timings, Pure Fishing’s owner, Newell Brands, announced only last week that its fishing business was available for sale.
At A Band of Anglers, Sébile has once again partnered with Constantin Pellissier, formerly a major shareholder who helped bring Sebile lures to the market in France in 2005.
Sébile’s exit from Pure Fishing was announced exclusively by Angling International at last year’s EFTTEX show in Budapest. Within just a few days of the story’s publication he had received approaches from 13 different businesses interested in engaging his services.
“Before that I had been trying to decide whether to take another job somewhere in the industry,” he said. “But receiving all those offers gave me the confidence to set up a new company.”
The full story of Patrick Sébile’s plans for A Band of Anglers will appear in the June issue of Angling International magazine.
