A new labour-saving machine introduced to the trade by Winn Grips at EFTTEX could bring a whole new way of thinking to the custom rod-building sector.
The device will strip cork and EVA handles, plus reel seats, from rods in a matter of a few minutes – without damaging the rod blank.
It was designed by Winn’s founder and CEO, Dr Ben Huang, a former aerospace engineer who worked on the team that put the first man on the moon.
Dr Huang launched his Winn Grips to the trade at the China Fish show in 2014 and the company now produces a huge choice of over-wraps, tapered and speciality grips and a range of rod handle components to suit just about every requirement.
The products use the ‘sticky’ technology that has made Winn a household name in the golf industry, and have brought a new dimension to fishing rod construction and repair.
“By taking the hard work and pain out of removing old rod handles, we believe the Winn Handle System will increase the demand for our products,” explained Dr Huang.
Two of the machines have already been installed in rod building and repair shops in Texas and California as part of a pilot programme. Read more about the project in the next issue of Angling International.
