Technology originally developed for surgical applications is the inspiration behind the Tauten Line Welder, a battery-powered device for connecting fishing line.
Surgeons use the technology for making ‘blind’ suture connections to eliminate knots. In fishing, the compact, hand-held or mountable Line Welder forms a loop connection to a lure or hook, or connects two lines together.
The Massachusetts manufacturer, Tauten Sports, says it works with all popular line types and sizes, including joining braid to fluorocarbon.
The moulded polymer sleeve takes about 35 seconds to form a loop, is water resistant and floats. Its lithium-ion battery delivers more than 100 welds per full charge and is rechargeable. The replaceable polymer cartridges provide about a dozen welds each.
The system comes with a welding head, AC and USB chargers and three welding cartridges. The device’s bayonet-mount design allows for easy changing of additional welding head options and accessories. One head is designed specifically for connecting braid to fluorocarbon or monofilament.
