The latest alternative to the oft-maligned practice of fishing in felt-soled boots is Rock Treads, aluminium discs that fix to the bottom of the boot and – according to the manufacturers – grab any rock surface like no other material in the world.
Rock Treads are the idea of Scott Bogg, who together with company co-founder. Forrest Rogers, is launching the new product with support from a crowdfunding campaign through Kickstarter.
Bogg and Rogers are marketing the eco-friendly product as the perfect solution to contamination and for converting any shoes into ideal wading boots.
“One of the biggest concerns when trout fishing is traction in the river and not transferring organisms from one water to another,” said Rogers. “Six states have already outlawed felt-soled wading boots and as fishermen we felt the need to come up with a better answer.”
The secret, says Bogg, is in the material. “Aluminium is the perfect choice because it is a soft metal. It is softer than the rocks and enables traction to be easily generated,” he explains.
“And because they are smooth and flat – not pointed like spikes – they are more comfortable to wear and don’t scratch surfaces. Unlike felt, they are also easy to clean, so you are able to leave algae and bacteria where it belongs.”
Each kit includes three disc sizes, fixing screws, a drill bit and a Torx bit. Kits start at $49, but are available on Kickstarter for a $40 donation.
Patrik Fulkrod, 2014 Orvis Guide of the Year, endorses the product: “Before Rock Treads all other stud applications have been harder than the rock. What makes this different is that the aluminium grips and moulds to the rock at every step. They are the best things available for river rock stability and affordable for all fly fishermen.”
The discs are attached simply by setting the pilot holes in the sole of the boot and screwing them in. Patterns can be customised to individual feet and to suit the environment. Discs can also be added or moved.
Designed and made in the USA, Rock Tread Rewards are available through the company’s KICKSTARTER page and vary according to the size of the donation.
