Okuma used what it describes as some of the brightest engineering minds in the US to design its new-for-2015 Azores spinning reel. Setting out with the twin goals of increasing strength and corrosion resistance, the company says the Azores delivers advancements on both fronts.
The Azores is unashamedly a dedicated, durable saltwater reel. The body, side-plate and rotor are all constructed from aluminium, giving the reel a reassuring rigidity. These durable qualities are further enhanced by a heavy duty bail arm and machined handle arm, both in aluminium.
And to combat corrosion, Okuma has also introduced what it terms its Mechanical Stabilising System (MSS), which uses internal long-strand carbon components to break the electrolysis that creates corrosion
Throw in Okuma’s dual force drag system that, combined with an over-sized spool shaft, raises the drag pressure and distributes it across the reel to dissipate heat, and here you have one uncompromising, ‘kick-ass’ piece of kit.
And the features don’t end there. The Azores is packed with seven corrosion resistant ball-bearings, while a quick-set anti-reverse mechanism helps maximise hook setting.
An internal oscillation system creates a smooth line lay to aid casting and of particular interest to braid users is a knurled spool designed to prevent line slippage.
The Okuma Azores reel comes in three sizes – 55, 65 and 80 – with maximum drag pressure ranging from 29lb in the 55 to 44lb in both the 65 and 80.
