Amid all the hype surrounding the roles of new technology and materials in product development and manufacture, new company Finn Utility offers a refreshing alternative.

This small design studio on the banks of the Winooski River in Vermont brings together natural materials and traditional sewing techniques in classically crafted fly-fishing accessories designed to last a lifetime.

Waxed canvas, leather, cotton, brass and shearling are hand-made into functional and durable products like fly wallets, duffles, sidebags and reel cases, the attraction of which lies in their handsome simplicity.

Products in demand by customers include the Essex Side Bag, the Streamer Wallet and the Huntington Duffle. The Essex Side Bag is an all-purpose tackle carrier fashioned from waxed twill and canvas, with bridle leather and brass fittings. Its functional elements include a rod holder loop, leather strap and internal and external pockets.

The Streamer Wallet is an attractive alternative to the plastic cases on the market. The water-resistant canvas and leather outer opens on to two patches of natural Texas sheep shearling.

Anglers looking for a bag that is equally at home in the bottom of a canoe or slung over the shoulder are catered for by Finn’s Huntington Duffle. It takes a five-piece fly rod and an internal pocket will store other fishing essentials. Materials include waxed twill and duck cotton canvas.

For Ryan McDonald, the company’s young creator, Finn Utility is the culmination of his design experience and a love for fly-fishing born in the company of his grandfather, a guide on Maine’s Rangeley Lakes.

Tactile products, many of which are surely destined to be family heirlooms, are tested on the nearby Winooski before being fine-tuned, sewn and delivered to the consumer.

McDonald’s mission is to create products of character that anglers are not able to get anywhere else and that will be handed down to children and grandchildren. “We are dedicated to respecting the traditonal aesthetic, with a touch of the new,” he says.
