Umpqua plans to mark its 45th year by pledging $45,000 to the restoration and conservation of the Tongass National Forest in south-east Alaska.

The Colorado fly fishing company, which celebrates its anniversary in 2017, will generate the funding from sales of its highly successful Tongass packs and bags, it revealed on day one of ICAST.

Best known for its amazing range of flies, Umpqua took the decision to extend the brand into luggage after reviewing what was available on the market and deciding the category needed an injection of fresh ideas.

“We looked at the outdoor industry and saw that what was happening there far exceeded what was happening in the fishing sector,” said Product Management Director, Brent Bauer. “So we decided to build some fishing bags that made sense to fishermen.”

The decision has been justified by a number of accolades, including a coveted ‘Best of Best’ award from Field and Stream. The company has also grown the business by several digits every year since the line was launched.

“Instead of throwing parties and eating cake we have decided to give something back to fishing’s resources,” said Bauer.

The Tongass National Park – also known as America’s Salmon Forest – is the 17 million acre home to one of the world’s largest wild Pacific salmon and trout populations.

A 2007 study reported that south-east Alaskan salmon and trout provided almost 11% of regional jobs and supported a $1 billion industry.

Umpqua unveiled an exciting range of products for ICAST visitors. “We have a great new class of flies, as well as some new additions to the ZeroSweep line of packs, bags and vests,” explained Marketing Manager Luke Wennik.

”We are also revealing some new fly boxes, Tiemco and Dream Stream fly tying tools and River Grip combo packs, along with new leaders, accessories and hooks.”
