Steer clear of ICAST and let me reap the benefits, says retailer

Steer clear of the show! That’s the advice of an ICAST regular when asked whether he would recommend fellow retailers visit the event.
But Chase Marsocci, co-owner of Florida-based Fast Break Bait and Tackle and a fishing guide, admits that his unusual message to potential visitors to the show is said from a purely selfish viewpoint.
He explains with a cheeky grin: “That’s my advice because it would leave me to enjoy all the benefits of the event!”
And he points to a business that has seen its sales grow between 10% and 20% over the last six years. “Not all of that is due to ICAST, but there is absolutely no doubt that the show has helped,” he said.
“The need for retailers to go to ICAST is overwhelming,” he adds on a more serious note. “I would not want to miss out.”
Marsocci adds that one of the most compelling reasons to attend is to build up relationships with manufacturers. He says: “Phone calls do not work – I know that. People call me all day long and it is just another call. All that changes after meeting people at ICAST. It is impossible to put a value on that.”
“I deal with an apparel company that is doing $45,000 of business a year with us – it’s a huge deal for one shop. Before going to ICAST I knew that I liked their products and what they offered, but I just could not get through to the right person on the phone.
“One meeting at the show changed all that. ICAST makes things happen. It makes a big difference when you are dealing direct – it has saved our company quite a lot of money doing business this way rather than going down the distributor route.”
Marcossi is also a fan of the ICAST On the Water product demo day events and is a two-time winner of the Bass & Birdies golf tournament. “It is an opportunity to meet a lot of senior figures within the industry in informal circumstances. It is a fun networking opportunity,” he adds.
