An initiative supported by the fishing tackle trade to introduce newcomers – particularly youngsters – to fishing in the UK netted a record 1,300 new anglers to the sport.
National Fishing Month (NFM) is an annual event that is run by the industry representative body for the country, The Angling Trades Association (ATA), and involved a nationwide schedule of 330 events over six weeks in August and September.
Naidre Werner, Chair of the ATA, said: “I am delighted with the results from this year’s Silver Jubilee celebrations. We continue to owe a debt of gratitude to the enthusiastic, loyal support of the voluntary organisers and coaches who actually plan and deliver the events every year. They are the ones who build initiatives like NFM and recruit the next generation of anglers to our wonderful sport.”
Werner also praised the industry for its input. She added: “This year we have benefited from the continued headline sponsorship of Daiwa, and Pure Fishing as well as the physical help in facilitating support to the organisers from tackle retailers, Fosters of Birmingham and Fishing Republic. Outstanding support has also come from manufacturers such as Dinsmores, Fladen, Fox, Korda, Middy, Svendsen Sport and Tricast.
“Retailer, Angling Direct, which donated nearly £3,000 through its ‘Bag for Life Scheme’ and the fishing media, including Angling Times and Angler’s Mail, also deserve our thanks.”
