Shimano says it has taken the next step in compact, lightweight casting reels with the new Aldebaran series.
Launched at the Bassmaster Classic last month, they are said to be ideal for both finesse techniques and casting lightweight crankbaits and jerkbaits.
The four models include
- Aldebaran 50 with 6.5:1 gear ratio;
- Left-hand retrieve 51 (6.5:1);
- 50HG (7.4:1);
- 51HG (7.4:1).
The new reels introduces Shimano’s ‘Silent Tune’ feature for quieter, vibration-reduced bearing operation. By lessening the vibration in the bearing that supports the spool – even when it is rotating at high speeds during casts – anglers are provided with a better level of smoothness and casting precision.
The reels also feature SVS Infinity brake system technology for easy-to-manage, consistent spool control and brake force, X-Ship for gear durability and efficiency and Shimano’s Stabile Spool Design (S3D) for further smoothness and reduced spool vibration.
“Put simply, our new Aldebaran series redefines the lightweight, compact, low profile baitcasting category,” said Bob Mahoney, a member of Shimano’s field test staff. “ Weighing in at a mere 4.7oz, while it is light, it is by no means a lightweight when it comes to durability in the most demanding fishing environments.
“While they excel at fishing jerkbaits, light crankbaits and a variety of finesses baits to target bass in the deepest vegetation, because the reels are housed in an electro-coated magnesium frame with C14+ material sideplates, they are also at home on a saltwater flat for chasing redfish, sea trout and other inshore situations.”
The Albebaran 50 and 51 retrieve at 25.5 inches of line per crank, while the faster gear 50HG and 51HG performs at just over 29 inches. All four reels handle from 115 yards of 20lb test PowerPro braid to 90 yards of 40lb test or from 105 yards of 10lb test to 70 yards of 14lb test mono.
