The first ever winner in the FishSmart tackle category of the Best New Product Showcase at ICAST was The SeaQualizer – a device specifically designed to reduce the trauma suffered by fish when they are returned to the water.
The new category was announced by the organiser of the show, the American Sportfishing Association (ASA), as the next phase of its commitment to conservation and is directed at developing fishing techniques, management approaches and tackle that reduce the catch of fish that need to be returned to the water and improving the survival of those that are.
And The SeaQualizer falls right into that category, reducing the effects of ‘barotrauma’ – releasing fish at three different depth settings (50ft, 100ft and 150ft).
Developed by a Florida-based company, Finovation Inc, it is a non-invasive pressure activated fish recompression tool that will return fish to a sufficient survival depth without puncturing or injuring them.
The SeaQualizer is pressure-activated to avoid premature release which can happen with other tools.
Mike Nussman, President and CEO of the ASA, said: “The SeaQualizer is just one example of the research and innovation that is taking place in the sport fishing industry to help conserve our nation’s fisheries, while at the same time providing anglers with products that they can use to make this happen.”
