Two new fishing tackle trade shows are to be launched in South Africa.
SAFTAD (the South African Fishing Tackle Agents and Distributors Association), which already runs the national trade show in Johannesburg, has added annual events in Durban and Cape Town.
The Durban show will take place on August 1st and 2nd this year, while 2016 will see the inaugural event in Cape Town. Both will be held over two days, one less than Johannesburg. Otherwise, the formula will be identical.
SAFTAD President, John Pledger, said the idea behind the move was to overcome the need for retailers to travel. “There are a lot of smaller shows around so by doing this we hope to make it easier for retailers,” he explained.
“Also, Durban is a seven-hour drive from Johannesburg and Cape Town is around three times that distance. Now retailers in those important areas will have a show much closer to home.
“We expect these trade shows to appeal to people for whom fishing tackle may not be the main element of their business, but which is nevertheless important.
“SAFTAD Secretary Mary-Ann Hodgskin has visited Cape Town to look at potential venues, but location and dates have yet to be decided. The intention is that both the new shows stay on the calendar as annual events.”
Exhibitors at all three shows must be SAFTAD members and overseas visitors are only allowed if they have a South African distributor.
Pledger is hoping SAFTAD’s initiative will help boost a trade that is suffering from a weak rand. With more than 12 rand to the dollar and 18 to the pound, export businesses have suffered. “Unit sales are pretty much on a par with last year but turnover is down,” he reported. “The trade is relatively comfortable, but could be happier.”
Dates for the Johannesburg show are August 14th, 15th and 16th.
