Okuma’s new EVx bass rods come off the back of two years design, development and testing by the company’s best pro anglers.
Jacob Wheeler, Matt Arey and Clent Davis have been fishing the carbon prototypes for some time and are finally happy with a series of tour-quality rods that will retail at around $100 (US).
Rods for every technique are included in the series and are rated the best in their class by the top tournament trio.
“These are some of the finest rods I have ever used in the $100 range,” says Davis. “My top selections are the 7ft 2in and the 7ft 5in models which I consider as all round utility rods. They are among my all-time favourites.”
FLW angler Arey chooses two spinning models, the 6101M and the longer 711MH. “The first is the perfect close quarter dropshot rod and an incredible small crankbait rod for shad raps,” he says. “The 711MH is a great choice for offshore vertical fishing where more distance is needed.”
Wheeler, a Bass Elite qualifier, has the complete EVx series and compares them to rods twice their price for looks and performance. “They have technique-specific actions for tour level needs. The 7ft 2in and 7ft 5in medium-heavies are must-have rods with super-fast actions. As a place for anglers to start, this is it.”
Components for the series include Alps stainless steel guide frames with Zirconium inserts and Fuji reels seats combined with split grips to save weight. Overall design is understated with the accent on perfomance. The rods are backed by a limited lifetime warranty.
