Okuma is among the world’s foremost manufacturers of reels for big game and tournament saltwater fishing. But the Californian company is the first to admit that not everyone falls into these specialist categories.
For many anglers, technique and species-specific reels are not just unnecessary, but often impractical, argues Okuma.
That is why it has introduced the Cortez, a family of three models with versatility and affordability at the heart of its design, described by Okuma as a ‘truly universal saltwater performer’.
Not that this new introduction is short of impressive features. Designed to be equally effective from beach, pier, jetty or boat, the Cortez is built on a tough, corrosion-resistant graphite frame, which, for the cash-conscious, is the number one cost differential between the $145 Cortez and the $290 Cedros star drag.
“With a workhorse drag system and top quality internal components, the Cortez will meet every need of countless saltwater anglers fishing for a wide variety of species with 15lb to 30lb monofilament or 50lb braid,” says Okuma. “With fluid casting, generous line capacities and high-speed gearing, there’s little it cannot do.”
Housed in the side plate is the exclusive Okuma Mechanical Stabilisation System, or MSS. Unlike traditional reels, MSS integrates the spool shaft, pinion gear, drive shaft and main gear into a single hold plate. “When under heavy load, the individual parts of the traditional system move independently and can apply pressure against each other,” explains Okuma. “With MSS all components move in concert, maintaining alignment and greatly reducing wear over the long term.
“What makes the Cortez and truly universal performer is its magnetic cast control system. It seals the magnets within their own environment and any chance of corrosion is eliminated. This takes the Cortez far beyond simply a bottom fishing or light trolling reel. It becomes a reel that can go anywhere, from the surf line to far offshore.”
The Cortez high speed drive system includes an Ergo Grip, anodized aluminium handle arm, XL gearing, dual anti-reverse systems, four stainless steel ball bearings and machined aluminium spool.
The Cortez is available in three sizes – 10, 12 and the all-new size five. Line capacities are 315 yards of 15lb for the size five; 350 yards of 20lb for the size10; and 400 yards of 25lb for the size 12. All capacities can be substantially increased for 30lb to 50lb braid.
Other features include:
- Machined aluminium, red anodised spool.
- Multi-disc Carbonite drag
- Swept handle to reduce wobble when cranking.
- 4BB and 1RB stainless steel ball bearings.
- Dual anti-reverse system.
- Drop down gear box with 6:2:1 ratio.
- Quick-set anti-reverse roller bearing
- One-year warranty.
