New ORCA Top Water System offers ‘explosive’ action

Saltwater anglers know that it’s the top level – on the surface – where some of the most explosive fishing action takes place.
With this in mind Shimano has expanded its Technical Fishing Systems to provide the right tools for fishing on top with the new ORCA Top Water System that includes its new ORCA floating pencil baits.
“It all started with our Butterfly jigs and vertical jigging various depths – next was Lucanus and close to the bottom jigging – then just below the surface fishing with our Waxwing swimming jigs,” said Shimano’s Senior Product Manager Robby Gant.
“And now with our new ORCA baits, combined with high-speed Stella and Sustain spinning reels spooled with PowerPro braid mounted on Terez ORCA popping rods, we are providing saltwater anglers with Technical Fishing Systems to target fish from on top to just about any depth.”
Key to the fish-catching action of the new ORCA lures is Shimano’s proprietary internal weight position plus an efficient aerodynamic design, added Gant. “The internal weight provides for a hard to resist erratic pop and dive action during retrieve, plus it will fly through the air for super long casts – you have the lure in the water longer making all kinds of racket that tuna, stripers and other surface feeding species just can’t resist,” said Gant.
The lures are offered in two sizes – the ORCA 160 measures 160mm (6.3ins) and weighs 58g (2oz) and the ORCA 190 at 190mm (7.5ins) and 88g (3oz).
Both come in six colours, Blue Sardine, Clear Silver, Green Mackerel, Black Silver, Purple Gold and Pink Silver. Each features ultra-sharp, high tensile treble hooks.
“For most anglers, fishing on the surface is a pure adrenalin rush. And with ORCA we feed that rush by putting together a complete system – lure, rod, reel and braided line – to quickly put you on the water with the right gear to handle any and all the action,” Gant explained.
“Tie on the ORCA bait to an 80lb to 100lb fluorocarbon leader and if you’re in the right spot you should be into something big.”
The ORCA Top Water System works with Shimano’s Stella SW and Sustain FG spinning reels – 5000, 6000, 8000 and 10000 sizes – spooled with zero-stretch, strike triggering PowerPro braid from 6.5lb up to 150lb test. There are two Terez rods with the ideal, comfortable grip to use ORCA baits all day long, the TZS-78H and 78XH. Both feature Fuji LC guide frames for tangle-free, long distance casts.
“It’s our next step at Shimano,” said Gant. “Throughout the company we’re all about fishing and coming up with the tackle – rods, reels, lures and line – to have fun and success on the water.”
Suggested retails prices are 24.99 (ORCA 160) and $29.99 (ORCA 190)
