A Danish fishing journalist and tackle inventor has linked up with one of the region’s top rod and lure brands to develop his unique invention for the predator market.

Jens Bursell, editor of the country’s top angling magazine, Fiske & Fri, has been working with Westin to develop his Release Rig which can be used to improve landing rates when used in conjunction with hard and soft baits for pike and other predators.

The Release Rig is a hook-mounting system that allows anglers to scale down four to five hook sizes – giving better penetration, safer hook-holds and higher landing rates. Additionally, the much smaller hooks, with reduced barbs, give shorter unhooking times and less bleeding which results in fewer injuries to fish.

“In spring the benefits of using my rigs was highlighted in the American scientific journal, PeerJ. Following publication of this, I was offered a collaboration with Westin on producing rigs for the predator segment,” explains Bursell.

“I have known Westin CEO Thomas Petersen for decades and fished with him many times, so I did not hesitate for a second in starting a cooperation.

“Working with Westin’s Product Manager, David Thormar, has been a pleasure and we are excited to be launching two types of rigs for the European market in January.

“Westin is a top quality brand and I am looking forward to collaborating with the company on producing other variants of the Release Rig concept in the future.”

Earlier this year Bursell also launched The Release Connector – a hook holder made of biodegradable plastic that enables the angler to use much smaller and better penetrating hooks. “This new system will boost the landing rate using in-line spoons and spinners for trout and salmon from 42%, with a normal set-up and big hooks, to 70% with a size 12 treble,” he added.

The Release Connectors currently sell via Bursell’s company – Outdoor Consult – at retail outlets in Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Norway and Holland, but Bursell has ambitious plans to make them more widely available across the region, adding that they work just as well for salmon, rainbow trout and seabass.
