Jim Murphy, former President of Hardy North America, has founded a new fishing tackle company.
Douglas Outdoors is planning to launch rods and reels and has taken booths at both the ICAST and IFTD shows.
Murphy resigned from his role at Hardy North America early in January, less than six months after Hardy & Greys was acquired by Pure Fishing.
He handed in his notice on the day that he was due to transfer from Hardy’s Pennsylvania offices to Pure Fishing’s world headquarters in Columbia, citing an ‘exhausting integration process’ and the need for a break from the industry as the reasons for his surprise departure.
Earlier this year Murphy was working behind the counter of his son’s tackle shop in Florida, but told Angling International that he would be back in the tackle industry at some point.
“My partners have backed my new efforts and we plan to launch with booths on both sides of the ICAST/IFTD show in Orlando,” revealed Murphy yesterday, from his new location in Syracuse, New York. “We will introduce two ranges of fly rods, along with a series of spin and casting rods. We will also launch two ranges of reels, one of which is made in our own factory here in the US.”
One of the fly fishing sectors best-known characters, Murphy worked at Thomas and Thomas before founding the Redington Fly Company, the Albright Tackle Company and the Landing Creek OEM Company between 1995 and 2008. He was at Hardy North America for five years.
