Industry rallies round to help Houston flood victims

Part of the Sports Authority + Outdoors headquarters in Katy, Texas, are being used to coordinate the rescue efforts in Houston following Hurricane Harvey.
↑ Texas-based Sports Authority + Outdoors has been coordinating the delivery of supplies to the victims of Hurricane Harvey.

Bass Pro Shops and Sports Authority + Outdoors are among a number companies within the industry to come to the aid of the victims of Hurricane Harvey which has left areas around Houston, Texas devastated by floods.

Bass Pro has been working with authorities to support the ongoing rescue and relief operation and has provided more than 80 Tracker boats to government agencies and rescue organisations in North America’s fourth largest city and other communities in Texas that have been affected by the disaster.

It is also supporting the disaster response organisations by donating truckloads of relief supplies totalling $40,000. Bass Pro has seven retail locations and seven boating centres in Texas, including three in the greater Houston area. The company is also supporting impacted associates through its Bass Pro Cares Fund, which provides critical living expenses in times of devastating need.

Meanwhile, Sports Authority + Outdoors, which is based in the Houston area, has reopened most of its stores in the area and is playing a major part in recovery efforts. Part of its headquarters in Katy has been converted into a command centre for the National Guard, Texas Department of Public Safety, FBI and several emergency services.

It has been providing first responders with food, shelter, clothing and equipment as they help in the rescue effort.

“These individuals are making the ultimate sacrifice by risking their lives to save others,” said J.K. Symancyk, Chief Executive Officer, Academy Sports + Outdoors. “The least we can do is provide supplies to keep them safe and give them a warm, dry place to rest, recharge and refuel.”

It has also donated 120 rescue boats alongside kayaks, canoes, paddles, sleeping beds, airbeds and life jackets as well as helping in the process of coordinating product donations to victims.

Fly fishing clothing and accessories manufacturer Fishpond donated 100% of the proceeds from the sales of its limited edition Redfish and artist Duke Beardsley’s Salty Dog shirts to the Houston Community Foundation.
