Industry heads to Capitol Hill to present fisheries vision

With Congress set to revise legislation vital to the country’s marine resources, the US sportfishing industry is stepping up efforts to safeguard its interests.
The Magnuson-Stevens Act (MSA) is the primary law governing marine fisheries management in the US and has a direct bearing on the future of the sport.
As the Act undergoes its first revision since 2007, Bass Pro Shops founder, Johnny Morris, and Maverick Boats President, Scott Deal, will next week present a new vision for saltwater fisheries management.
The vision comes in a comprehensive report first introduced to the fishing and boating industries in February at the International Miami Boat Show. Now Morris and Deal, co-chairmen of the Commission on Saltwater Recreational Fisheries Management, are taking it to Capitol Hill to work with Congress as the MSA progresses.
The fishing industry believes the MSA does not sufficiently address the use of public fishery resources by anglers. The Commission’s report focuses specifically on recreational fishing and differentiates the economic, social and conservation needs from those of commercial fishing.
It makes the point that, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), 11 million Americans go saltwater fishing each year, contributing more than $70 billion to the nation’s economy and $1.5 billion for the conservation of aquatic resources and habitats.
Morris and Deal will present “A Vision for Managing America’s Saltwater Recreational Fisheries” at the National Press Club on March 26th.
