One of the award winners at this year’s IFTD says that the event is a ‘thing of the past’ as a stand-alone show.
At a time when the US fly fishing world waits with baited breath for an announcement on the future of IFTD, Johnny Le Coq, founder of Fishpond – winner of the Best Luggage award in Reno, Nevada – says that an alliance needs to be struck with either ICAST or the Outdoor Retailer shows for the good of the industry.
He said: “To grow our industry we need a forum that allows access for many of our dealers to see new products and an incentive such as a larger show combined with either the Outdoor Retailer or ICAST.
“It works for brands as it is a way to attract buyers that we would normally not interact with, but also for dealers who have the opportunity to see other new product.
“The stand-alone IFTD show is a thing of the past and we must now move into a new arena that folds the fly fishing industry into a larger venue.”
Jim Klug, Chairman of the Board of the American Fly Fishing Trade Association (AFFTA) – organiser of the show – told attendees at the IFTD Awards presentation that an announcement on the future of the show would be made later this month.
Le Coq welcomed the award his company received at IFTD for its Westwater Rolling Carry On. “As one of the very few companies in the world to manufacture welded luggage, Fishpond was very proud to receive recognition for this unique design,” he said.
“We spent a full year developing the largest collection of welded product in our industry and our commitment to this category has been well received. Fishpond will continue to innovate and bring new offerings to our Westwater Collection. We feel innovation is the key to our success and since founding our business almost 13 years ago, it has been our never-ending quest to create each and every one of our products with attention to fine detail and quality.”
Denver, Colorado-based Fishpond describes its Westwater Rolling Carry On as being equally at home in a crowded airport or off the beaten track.
Rollerblade wheels ensure smooth travel and the integrated and removable backpack straps or telescoping luggage handles make it easy to transport.
Padded Jacquard webbing carry handles make lifting it in and out of overhead bins on planes or trains simple, while the two interior zippered pockets are ideal for smaller items.
The bag will retail at $279.95.
