Jeff Goldberg, of FISH307.com, will be visiting ICAST for the 23rd time in July.

When fishing tackle dealer Jeff Goldberg recommends ICAST to his fellow retailers he doesn’t do so lightly. His business, Fish307.com, in Lake George, New York, has been visiting the world’s largest trade show for 22 years.

The event, says the owner and President, has played an important part in the growth of his company, which today operates on three levels – a bricks and mortar store, an e-commerce site and a telephone mail order operation.

ICAST’s biggest attraction is arguably as the showcase for thousands of new tackle products. But the show offers much more than that, insists Goldberg.

“Yes, one of the key reasons for going is that every year we will find something new from an up and coming manufacturer,” he explains. “We place orders at the show. Generally we do not have any prepared before we go, but if we find something we can only get at the show we do buy.

“But the main reason we attend is because of the opportunities for face-to-face networking, which is the real truth behind business relationships. By creating personal relationships we have been able to learn all about new products, technologies and deals that would not have come our way by staying at home. It has helped our business thrive.

“Every business goes through ups and downs and if you have a personal relationship with your suppliers there will be opportunities to work together through both those things.”

Fish307.com started life as Peace Pipe Bait and Tackle in 1992, specialising in the sale and repair of downrigging equipment, as well as bass and northern pike tackle. The current name was introduced three years later when the business decided to develop a mail order operation.

“I wanted a toll free number with the word ‘fish’ in it,” recalls Goldberg. “The person at the company we were dealing with came up with the only number available at the time – 1-800-FISH(3474)-307. I said ‘thanks, you just named our mail order business.’ In 2002 the store itself was renamed FISH307.com and the name now extends across all three facets of our business.”

FISH307.com moved into a new and bigger building in 2009, from where it has extended its operation worldwide, a success story in which ICAST has played no small part.
