The increasing importance of kayaks in the sport of fishing was highlighted at ICAST by Hobie Cat’s stunning success in the New Product Showcase Awards.
The company’s Hobie Mirage Pro Angler 12 sensationally picked up the Overall Best of Show Award, beating the more traditional categories of fishing tackle that tend to dominate the industry awards and putting kayaks firmly on the map as an essential angling accessory.
Hobie Cat Vice President Sales, Ruth Triglia, said: “A lot of what makes this honour so particularly meaningful is the fact that it recognises the impact that kayaks are making in the world of fishing.
“Kayaks present an opportunity to reach so many more people and turn them into anglers because of their affordability and easier accessibility – and that is good for everyone.”
The ultimate prize in Orlando came after Hobie Cat also picked up Best of Show in the Boat category.
Triglia added that winning the top award at ICAST was ‘priceless’ to the company in terms of marketing. She said: ”We have not worked out how much its worth in dollars and cents, but we know ICAST is such a respected, iconic fishing show that to receive this award from them really says to the world that Hobie ‘gets’ fishing and is committed to delivering what anglers are looking for. That type of recognition is priceless!
“We have already capitalised on the award and the ICAST winners’ logo sits proudly on the front page of our website. We have also produced press releases and dealer bulletins highlighting our success. ICAST has an outstanding media following to say the least and we have been seeing articles cropping up everywhere. To say that we are extremely grateful would be an understatement.”
Triglia added that fitting features found only on much larger, expensive boats and including them into its 12’ platform that can go into the ‘skinniest’ of water really separates the Pro Angler 12 from its competition.
“Also, to get the level of adjustability that we have built into our seat you would normally have to look at a car, not a boat – and a high-end car at that!, ”said Triglia.
“Then there is the pivoting tackle system that delivers your tackle box to your fingertips at the twist of a hatch latch and the ease of plugging in your Lowrance® fish finder without any trouble or tools.
“The list goes on, but these are features that are virtually unheard on a kayak-type platform – I say kayak-type because it really is a boat, but with all the advantages of a kayak.”
