Hobie saved a big double announcement for this week’s ICAST trade show in Orlando. The leading kayak manufacturer revealed a partnership with premium knives and tools manufacturer Gerber, as well as announcing that the Hobie Fishing World Championships will return to Europe in 2018.
The Gerber deal has been six months in the making, said Hobie Fishing’s Keeton Eoff, and ties in with Gerber’s move into fishing accessories.
“Like Hobie, Gerber is very focused on adventure fishing, so this makes a great fit for both companies,” said Eoff. “They have a great new range of fishing tools.”
Gerber’s VP Marketing, Andrew Gritzbaugh, said that Gerber had dabbled in fishing products in the past. “But we have not given it the levels of attention and desire it has needed until now,” he added. “As a partner, Hobie will help us make that bridge to adventure-driven anglers.
Gerber, which had its own booth at ICAST for the first time this year, plans to release its fishing range in the Spring of 2018. It will also be further exposed to the market as a sponsor of the annual Hobie World Kayak Fishing Championships, to be held in Amal, Sweden.
The venue is Lake Vanern, Sweden’s biggest lake, where pike and perch will be the quarry for the 50-plus anglers who qualify from around the world. The event returns to Europe for the second time after taking place in The Netherlands three years ago.
The full story of Gerber’s plans for the fishing market will appear in the August issue of Angling International.
