The Hardy Ultralite SDS fly reel has been around in the US for a season, but is new to Europe this year and will be available from September.
Since acquiring Hardy, Pure Fishing has assured the market that the legacy of the British manufacturer will be carefully preserved – and it looks to have delivered on its promise with this classic reel for inshore and big river fishing.
With a polished and anodised finish, the reel exudes style, but the Ultralite is about more than just appearance. Built to handle big fish, its aerospace grade, aluminium bar stock provides extreme structural strength.
SDS (which stands for sealed drag system) is a waterproof, saltwater-safe drag engineered to withstand extreme temperatures and punishing treatment from powerful saltwater and freshwater trophy specimens.
The low-inertia, six-sided disc brake system generates 14 pounds of drag (SDS 12000), a feature Hardy deems mandatory to make it fit for purpose. The drag adjustment is easily monitored by a 360-degree, colour-coded control knob.
The large arbor design ensures rapid line recovery, while the spool’s quick release feature means the reel can be converted to right or left hand operation using a supplied tool.
There are three reels in the Ultralite SDS line. The SDS 8000 is designed for 7, 8 or 9-weight lines, weighs 9.73 ounces and measures 4.5 inches across. With weight-forward WF9 fly line, the reel holds an additional 180 yards of 20lb Dacron backing.
The SDS 10000 is designed for 9, 10 or 11-weight lines, weighs 10.73 ounces and measures 4.7 inches across. With weight-forward WF11 fly line, the reel holds an additional 280 yards of 30lb Dacron backing.
The SDS 12000 is designed for 11, 12 or 12-plus-weight line, weighs 12.29 ounces and measures 5.3 inches across. With weight-forward WF12 fly line, the reel holds an additional 380 yards of 30lb Dacron backing.
Extra spools for each size are available to buy.
