While fishing off the Panama coast, members of Halco Tackle had an opportunity to test its famous Australian lures on the local sportfish.
The company’s Ben and Neil Patrick and Tim Carter, were fishing with representatives of Halco’s agents in Panama, Alta Pesca.
They were in action near San Jose Island, in the Las Perlas Island chain, close to some rocky outcrops when the Laser Pro 190DD lure, in its new H81 Liquid Lime colour, was taken and headed west ‘in a big way’.
Halco Marketing Manager, Carter, takes up the story: “The fish jumped a long way out, but was immediately identified as a tarpon.”
Ben Patrick was on the rod and initially the fish was estimated to weigh around 100lb.
“It fought pretty hard, taking us around several reef systems trying to shed the lure, but Alfredo – the skipper – did a great job keeping the fish away from all the danger areas and Ben did a fantastic job keeping the pressure on the fish the whole time,” said Carter.
The fight lasted for around 90 minutes on 30lb conventional tackle. When the fish finally came to the boat it took three men to lift and was estimated to be around 200lb.
